The German war cemetery Bourdon is in the French Picardy , Somme department , 18.5 kilometers northwest of Amiens . 22,216 soldiers from the Second World War are buried on the war cemetery.
layout
The German war cemetery in Bourdon was designed by Paul Schmitthenner . A ten meter high round building with a diameter of twelve meters houses the marble sculpture The Mother of Gerhard Marcks . The path leads from the rotunda to the Hochkreuz . There are 44 blocks with graves around the path. The grave crosses are made of limestone . There are three names on each side of a grave cross.
War dead
The cemetery is a collective cemetery for the German war dead from the Somme, Nord and Pas-de-Calais departments . Here rest the German soldiers who were killed in the advance towards the English Channel coast in May 1940 and those who were killed in the retreat from France in late August / early September 1944. The German soldiers who died in captivity were also buried here.
