The German war cemetery Pordoi ( Italian Cimitero militare tedesco del Passo Pordoi ) is located at the Pordoi Pass in the Dolomites in Italy . 8,582 fallen from World War I and 849 from World War II are buried here.

location

The war cemetery is on the Great Dolomite Road from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo above the Pordoi Pass .

history

During the First World War, Austro-Hungarian, German and Italian troops faced each other in the Dolomites between 1915 and 1917 . The soldiers died from fighting and also from the cold and snow.

The war cemetery at Pordoi Pass was a direct result of the war graves agreement concluded in 1937 between the German Reich and the Kingdom of Italy . Construction on the memorial began in 1937. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, however, the work was not completed and was then discontinued. In 1956 it was reopened and the memorial was finally inaugurated on September 19, 1959.

The crypt is an octagonal structure. Light falls into the interior through three narrow notches on each of the walls. In the middle is a shell made of limestone. 8,582 Austrian and German dead from the First World War rest in the crypt.

Immediately around the crypt there is a five meter high circular wall with a diameter of 30 meters. In the soil of another outer circular wall with a diameter of 54 meters, 849 dead from the Second World War rest in an 8.5-meter-wide earth ring.

museum

A museum on the nearby Pordoi Pass uses found objects and photographs to show the hardships and cruelties to which the soldiers were exposed, especially during the mountain war. Uniforms, weapons and objects of daily life are on display.
