The second German indoor championship for men was held on March 2nd and 3rd, 1963 in the Berlin Sports Palace . The Berlin HC was able to defend its title won last year.
The champions of the 11 state hockey associations as well as a second representative from the host association Berlin were entitled to start. The game mode has been changed compared to the first championship . Initially, three groups were planned in which everyone played against each other, then the three group winners should then each play off the master against each other.
But that was changed “on the basis of legitimate wishes”. It was played in four groups, each against each other. Then the group third played in the knockout system for places 9–12, the second group for places 5–8 and the first group for places 1–4. The groups were drawn as follows:
Group A: Berlin 1, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen
Group B: West Germany, Rhineland-Palatinate / Saar, Bavaria
Group C: Hessen, Württemberg, Berlin 2
Group D: Baden, Lower Saxony, Hamburg
The playing time was twice 20 minutes with a break of 5 minutes. A team consisted of 6 players and 6 substitutes. With the same number of points - two points for a win, 1 point for a draw - the goal difference in the division procedure decided the order in the table.
