The German Embassy School Izmir Branch is the 140th German school abroad . It was founded in 2008 and is located outside the city center of Izmir in Urla-Kuşçular. The comprehensive school with attached kindergarten is a branch of the German School Ankara and is attended by around 180 children and young people between the ages of two and 20 and looked after by around 40 employees (as of 2018).

On the last day of class before the start of the summer vacation at the end of June 2018 , the responsible regional authority of the Turkish Ministry of Education closed the school because there was “no legal basis” for its operation.

On August 27, the school started again in the 2018/19 school year.

history

In November 2007, a small group started again with the aim of “creating a school that has solid financial and legal footing and offers an ideal living and learning environment for our children”. It was founded in 2008 with the support of NATO , business and the German Consulate General Izmir.

School organization

The school pursues the goals of German foreign cultural and educational policy and is geared towards German educational goals. The not-for-profit private school offers lessons in German according to Thuringian curricula. In this way, the school ensures that German and German-speaking children in Izmir and the surrounding area receive school supplies. In addition, the German School Izmir offers the opportunity for Turkish returnees from Germany to continue their children's education under the same conditions.

The German Embassy School Izmir Branch is subordinate to the Consulate General of the Federal Republic in Izmir.

The German School Izmir is supported by the school association of the German School Izmir - private school of the German Embassy in Ankara.

The school has the approval of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Classes are based on the curriculum of the state of Thuringia for grammar schools and prepare students for German school leaving certificates.

Kindergarten and preschool

In kindergarten and preschool, the children are specifically prepared for the transition to the first grade of elementary school . They receive special support in the gross and fine motor area, learn the basic requirements for learning to read and write and develop their ideas about numbers and quantities. The focus is also on social skills and their promotion. Before entering preschool, the children take a language test that can be used to determine any need for support. Children whose mother tongue is not German receive additional linguistic support.

primary school

In grades 1 to 4, emphasis is placed on open teaching and learning forms such as weekly schedules, project work and station work in order to form the basis for independent learning. The children are looked after in small classes and supported in a variety of ways.

Secondary level I.

In the lower secondary level (grades 5–10), the methods learned in primary school are deepened and linked to the content and topics of the specialist teaching of the lower secondary level . Class 5 is set up as an orientation level, at the end of which the students are classified according to type of school. Classes are taught in accordance with the Thuringian grammar school curriculum, with secondary and secondary school students being taught in a differentiated manner. At the end of the lower secondary level, the pupils acquire the secondary or secondary school certificate and, if necessary, the right to transfer to the upper level of the gymnasium .
