Kurt Strebel (born April 20, 1921 in Wohlen ; † October 26, 2013 in Zurich ) was a Swiss mathematician who dealt with function theory .

Strebel received his doctorate in 1953 under Rolf Nevanlinna at the University of Zurich ( on the circular normalization problem of conformal mapping ). 1953 to 1955 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and at Stanford University . He became professor in Friborg in 1955 and succeeded Nevanlinna at the University of Zurich in 1963 when Nevanlinna returned to Finland.

Together with the Nevanlinna student and professor Hans Künzi, he founded the Nevanlínna Colloquium in Zurich (later also in other places) in order to maintain contacts with the former professor in Zurich, Rolf Nevanlinna.

In 1977 he became a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences. He was invited speaker at the 1974 International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver ( On quadratic differentials and extremal quasiconformal mappings ).

The Strebel differentials in the Teichmüller theory are named after him .
