German bookstore award

The German Bookstore Award is an award from the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Germany for independent, owner- managed bookstores based in Germany . Particularly small bookstores "that offer a literary range or a cultural event program , that pursue innovative business models or are involved in the field of reading and literature promotion" are honored. Every year around 100 bookstores are awarded in several categories.

history

The award, which was awarded for the first time in 2015, was prepared in collaboration between Stefan Weidle from the Kurt Wolff Foundation and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media , State Minister Monika Grütters . At the time, 108 bookstores were nominated for the award, each with an annual turnover of less than one million euros.

Categories

The conditions of participation are announced annually with the same recurring categories and their endowments:

“The endowed seals of approval are awarded in three categories to bookstores whose average annual turnover in the past three years has been less than one million euros:

  • Seal of approval combined with a bonus of 7,000 euros each for up to one hundred outstanding bookstores that have been awarded the German Bookstore Prize.
  • Seal of approval combined with a bonus of 15,000 euros each for up to five bookstores that stand out from the bookstores nominated for the German Bookstore Award.
  • Seal of approval combined with a bonus of 25,000 euros each for the three best bookstores nominated for the German Bookstore Award.

In addition, an undoped seal of approval is awarded to up to ten bookstores whose annual sales in the past three years have exceeded one million euros. "
