The German Association of Technical and Scientific Associations e. V. (DVT) is a non-profit registered association based in Berlin. It currently has 36 technical and scientific societies with a total of more than 210,000 members (natural scientists, engineers, companies, organizations and institutes).

tasks

According to the statutes, the purpose of the association is to deal with joint work and tasks in the various fields of technology that go beyond the professional scope of duties of the individual associations. These include in particular:

  • the promotion of technical sciences,
  • the standardization of common technical bases,
  • the further development of technical teaching,
  • participation in legislation in the field of technology and in questions of technical management.

The aim is to ensure that technical and scientific work has an appropriate influence.

The DVT sees itself as a link between science, business, politics and society.

In addition to political advice, the further development of patents and the representation of German technical and scientific positions on a European and global level, an important focus of the association's activities is in particular the promotion of young technical and scientific talent and the further development of the technical and scientific educational landscape.

history

The DVT was first founded on May 27, 1916. Founding members were the Association of German Engineers , the Association of German Electrical Engineers , the Association of German Ironworkers , the Shipbuilding Society , the Association of German Chemists and the Association of German Architects and Engineers Associations .

During the time of National Socialism , the association was dissolved on August 1, 1934 and was only re-established after the end of the war. In addition to the founding members VDI, VDE and VDEh, the German Association for Gas and Water , the Association of German Foundry Experts , the Society of German Metallurgists and Miners (GDMB) and the German Society for Chemical Apparatus were involved in the re-establishment on August 5, 1948 .

organization

The board of directors of DVT currently consists of five people. The Chairman of the Board of Management with sole power of representation is Gerald Gerlach .

The DVT office is based in Berlin. The managing director of DVT is Dr. Thomas Kiefer.

The DVT has the following committees:

  • Engineering and technology issues
  • science and technology
  • Legal and tax issues
  • Publishing issues
  • National Monitoring Committee of FEANI

activities

EUR ING

The DVT is the national contact point for applying for the FEANI title EUR ING ( european engineer ). This certificate is intended to increase the mobility of engineers in Europe. The National Monitoring Committee is responsible for examining applications for EUR ING.

The international comparability of professional qualifications poses a problem for many people today when they want to work or do research in another country. In the field of engineering, FEANI's EUR ING title is an exemplary example of strengthening international recognition of professional qualifications.

With the EUR ING title, work is being carried out to implement the European "Directive 2005/36 / EC on the recognition of professional qualifications" from 2005. The EUR ING title has been officially recognized by the European Commission since 1991 to help ensure that professional qualifications in the engineering sector are recognized across European borders. Due to the merging of markets in the context of globalization, companies and people often operate internationally.

In most cases, no official license is required to practice the engineering profession. For example, numerous German engineers work in large companies in other EU countries without a license in the respective country. However, approval is required in the regulated area and this is still very different in the countries of Europe.

Since there are a large number of study systems and degrees in Europe and around the world, obtaining admission to practice is often difficult and in some cases is subject to additional training requirements. In some countries, the EUR ING title is now required as proof of professional qualification, for example by the Board of Engineers in Malaysia.

The DVT sees the EUR ING title and the associated process for proving a professional qualification as an exemplary model for improving international comparability and recognition of further professional qualifications in the technical and scientific field.

DVT Prize "Technology and the Public"

The DVT Prize “Technology and the Public” was awarded on the initiative of Karl Steinbuch between 1983 and 1993 for publications whose most important feature is the promotion of the relationship between technology and the public.

Werner von Siemens Ring Foundation

The DVT has been supporting the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation on a voluntary basis for many decades .

collaboration

FEANI

The association is the German member of the European engineering association FEANI .

In 2013, Hans Heinz Zimmer, Director of DVT, was a member of FEANI's Executive Board. In addition, the DVT was involved in other FEANI activities, which primarily served to improve the international comparability of professional qualifications. Among other things, the DVT organizes the National Monitoring Committee (NMC) of FEANI for the EUR ING title.

Technical and scientific prizes

The DVT is entitled to propose the following technical and scientific prizes and awards:
