Breeding history

The breeding of the German riding pony began around 1965 as a cross between different pony and horse breeds, especially Welsh ponies , Arabs , Anglo-Arabs and English thoroughbreds . The aim of the breeders at the time was to provide ponies for children in the regaining strength of the tournament scene, which on the one hand cut a good figure at the tournament and on the other hand were suitable for equipping children with a warmblood-oriented little horse that they could control, but one that nonetheless made one has a certain type or character of a pony .

Sports

Pony tournament sport is particularly encouraged in Europe. The German riding ponies, which must not be larger than 1.48 (1.51 according to the latest tournament rules for re-measurements at international tests) in order to be registered as tournament ponies, are used by children and young people up to the age of 16 in the sports of dressage, jumping and Versatility presented at championships. Riders older than 16 years are also allowed to participate in regional tournaments. Important tournaments for pony riders are the German Youth Championships, the European Championships and the “Prize of the Best”. In dressage, the international dressage tasks of the FEI (as of 2009) are ridden, i.e. preparatory test, team evaluation and individual evaluation. For ponies, this corresponds to class L with shoulder-in and traversals on a square measuring 20 m × 60 m. The show jumping riders have to ride a pony M-class, the eventing riders an A-dressage, an A-jumping and an A-terrain test. In order to be able to take part in the championships and championships, the pony riders must either be in the regional, state or federal ranks. Each breeding country defines a certain number of successes that the couple must have achieved in order to be appointed to the national team by the respective national coach. Those who are in the national squad can, after visual examinations, take part in national tournaments such as the German Championships, the “European Youngster Classics” and the “Prize of the Best”, in which they qualify or are named by the national coach. Based on the successes at these tournaments, it will be decided who will be appointed to the national team by the national coaches. At the age of 16, a pony rider automatically leaves the squad.
