The Devil's Peak ( Engl. For Teufelsspitze ; Afrikaans Duiwelspiek ) is a mountain in Cape Town , South Africa on the east side of Table Mountain . It has a height of 1002 meters and is next to the Lion's Head one of the peaks of the Table Mountain massif.
The mountain is overgrown with fynbos , the typical vegetation of the Cape region.
history
Legend has it that the pirate van Hunks retired to Devil's Peak in the early 18th century to live there. One day a stranger came by with whom he was conducting a smoking competition that lasted several days. The pirate won and the stranger had to give his name: It was the devil incarnate . Both people are said to have dissolved in smoke that had drawn over Table Mountain. This is how the famous cloud cover is said to have arisen over the massif, the so-called "tablecloth of Table Mountain". The name of the mountain is said to come from this legend.
However, the name used to be Taubenspitze. Much Dutch was spoken in Cape Town until 1806 ; hence the name of the survey was Dutch. Since “deaf” and “devil” sound very similar in language, this change has occurred over time.
In 1795 the mountain was used by the English to fortify the city. There are still historic buildings and cannons there. One of the buildings - the Lion's Log House built by the British General, Sir James Craig - has been declared a National Monument.
