Business areas

General

Devolo's main business area is products for data transmission via internal power and coaxial cables and thus for the simple construction of a network for Internet, VoIP , audio transmission or IPTV with prioritization of live streaming services ( QoS ). A registered trademark of devolo AG is dLAN ( English direct Local Area Network ).

Devolo is also a manufacturer of smart home components for consumers and thus operates in the market for retrofit solutions. Other areas of activity of the company are the sale of powerline adapters in the OEM segment as well as products for powerline communication in the field of energy networks, the smart grid . In addition, devolo offers Powerline integration modules based on the GreenPHY standard, which can be built into suitable products.

With a market share of 70% in Germany, 50% in Europe and approx. 30% worldwide, the company has a leading position in the powerline product segment of the IT industry. In 2009 the export share of sales was 60%.

The majority of the 300 employees employed in 2018 worked in product development.

End customer products

MicroLink DLAN duo , older PowerLAN adapter from devolo with 10/100 Mbit Ethernet and USB interface
  • dLAN: The devolo PowerLAN product lines based on the HomePlug AV 2 standard. For details of the development, see section #History .
  • dLAN WiFi: The technology, long known as WiFi Move , is based on several WLAN access points in the house that are connected to the network via Powerline. They are intended to provide a high level of WLAN availability: The individual powerline WLAN adapters set up a shared WLAN, and the mobile devices automatically connect to the access point with the strongest transmission.
  • dLAN TV SAT was a discontinued product for the transmission of satellite TV over the power line. The LNB of the satellite antenna was connected to a powerline-capable satellite receiver. The satellite TV signal was available at any socket in the household for use by set-top boxes , computers , smartphones and tablet PCs . Devolo initially used a proprietary standard; the last generation of dLAN TV SAT delivered was specified according to the SAT> IP standard .
  • devolo Home Control - Smart Home products.
  • devolo Magic - devolo PowerLAN product lines based on the G hn standard

Industrial customer products

  • dLAN GreenPHY: In addition to conventional powerline adapters, devolo produces powerline integration modules that support the GreenPHY standard. That serves u. a. for the transmission of narrow-band control signals as part of a smart home control.
  • dLAN PROFESSIONAL offers configuration options and additional support. Public institutions or retail businesses can transmit data without their own network infrastructure. While powerline networks are limited to 8 adapters for end customers, this number can be exceeded with dLAN Professional products. The dLAN 500 AVpro UNI product also enables communication both via coax networks and via (telephone) two-wire lines.
  • Smart grid: Products for the energy sector, such as energy suppliers and metering point operators. Among other things, digital electricity meters, modems for data transmission in the low and medium voltage network and smart meter gateways are offered .

history

Historical logo from 2013

devolo was founded in 2002 as a management buy-out from the data communications division of ELSA AG . In the early years of the business were analog modems and ISDN adapters and ADSL - router developed and marketed.

  • In 2003 devolo was the first manufacturer in Europe to introduce carrier frequency system adapters based on the HomePlug 1.0 standard . In addition, this year devolo became the market leader in the area of analog modems and HomePlug products in Germany.
  • In 2004 sales were expanded to all of Europe.
  • In 2006 devolo presented the "dLAN 200" product line, which replaced the previous generations with 14 Mbit / s and 85 Mbit / s gross data rate. The dLAN 200 itself achieves a gross data rate of 200 Mbit / s, the net data rate is between 100 and 150 Mbit / s. Devolo advertised dLAN 200 as a multimedia home network for all triple play services such as broadband Internet, VoIP and IPTV (HomePlug AV).
  • In 2007 the Powerline portfolio for professional users was presented. In addition to power lines, these devices can also use coax networks and two-wire lines for data communication.
With dLAN TV SAT, devolo also presented a solution for end customers in 2007 that enables powerline technology to be used for satellite television. The in-house power line is used like a coax network; today the devolo dLAN TV SAT products are based on the SAT-to- IP standard.
  • In 2009 an InStat study confirmed devolo as the global market leader in the powerline segment.
  • In 2010, devolo introduced dLAN Cockpit, the first powerline configuration and monitoring software for private users.
  • In 2011, devolo introduced the Powerline adapter with a gross data rate of 500 Mbit / s after the IEEE 1901 standard had been adopted , which are fully downward compatible with dLAN 200. It should enable the in-house distribution of the new VDSL and FTTH connections. The first products came onto the market in 2011.
  • In 2013, devolo presented the first Powerline adapter with 600 Mbit / s, the dLAN 650 line , at the IFA in Berlin . They provide a gross data rate of 600 Mbit / s. The dLAN 650 is the first product line to feature range + technology ; for the first time, the protective conductor of the power line is included to increase the data transfer rate and to increase the range . This means that all three conductors of a power line can now be used for data transmission. devolo has also applied for a patent for the coupling process. The company also announced that it has sold around 20 million dLAN products in Europe since the company was founded.
  • In 2014, devolo launched the dLAN 1000+, the first PowerLAN products with a transmission speed of 1000 Mbit / s . This speed is achieved through an adaptation of the MIMO process for wired transmission: the same frequency bands are used twice for data transfer by using two wires of the power cable in parallel.
  • In 2015, devolo entered the smart home market with the new devolo Home Control product group . In addition, the company was awarded the medium-sized company prize of the news broadcaster n-tv in the “Brand” category, which honors so-called hidden champions .
  • In 2016 devolo presented the WiFi bridge devolo GigaGate.
  • In 2018 devolo launched a weatherproof WiFi outdoor adapter for end customers. In 2018, devolo also introduced the new devolo Magic product range, which uses the G.hn standard instead of Homeplug AV 2.

The product range has been continuously expanded: in 2005 with ADSL2 + solutions, in 2006 with 200 Mbit / s powerline products ( Homeplug AV ), in 2007 with powerline business products (network transmission via coaxial, telephone or power cables). In 2008 the product dLAN TV Sat appeared , the first adapter for satellite TV transmission over the in-house power network, followed in 2010 by the expansion dLAN TV Sat 1300-HD , the first DVB-S receiver that no longer needs an antenna cable, but via the power line works.
