The Dez Dam ( Persian سد دز) is a large dam in Iran that was built in 1963 for the purpose of electricity generation, irrigation and flood protection.
It is located on the Dez River (a tributary of the Abi ) 32 km above or 25 km north of the city of Dezful and 20 km northeast of Andimeschk in the Khuzestan Province in southwest Iran.
The concrete arch dam is 203 meters high, making it one of the highest on earth. But also the height indication 207 m can be found. The dam closes off a narrow valley. There are also two values for the crown length: 212 or 518 meters, the first of which is more likely. Your flood relief consists of two tunnels with diameters of 14 and 12.6 meters. The reservoir content of the dam is 3340, according to other sources more than 3460 million cubic meters. At the time of its creation, it was the largest hydropower project in Iran. The Karun-3 and Karun-4 dams are even larger today .
The hydropower plant is supplied via two tunnels with a diameter of 10 m. It has eight turbines designed for flows of 59.2 m³ / s and an output of 80.8 MW each, a total of 646 MW. Another figure speaks of 250 MW. The usable drop height is 152 meters. The power plant is located in a cavern with the dimensions length × width × height = 75 by 18 by 35 meters.
The water from the dam irrigates 80,000 hectares of land in Chuzestan, among other things for the cultivation of sugar cane.
