Dezful ( Persian دزفول; also Desful , Dezh-pol ) is a more than 5000 year old city on the river Dez in the province of Chuzestan in southwestern Iran . One of the city's special attractions is a bridge from the 3rd century AD.

history

The name "Dezful" is derived from the words "Dezj" (fortress) and "Pol" (bridge), which refers to the bridge to the fortress or fortified bridge . The original name of the city was 'Dezjpol', but it was changed to Dezful after the occupation of the area by the Arabs , as there was no equivalent in the Arabic language for the sound combination zj and the sound p ; z also became s .

After the victory of Shapur I over the Roman Emperor Valerian in the Battle of Edessa (260), the Roman prisoners of war - as with the better-known Band-e Kaisar - were used to build the bridge, which shows numerous facets of Roman construction technology.

It is also believed that a fortress was built to protect the strategically important bridge over the Dez River - hence the name - although no remains of such a castle have been found. Interestingly, the part of the old town that borders the bridge is called Ghal'eh (castle). In the middle of the river, near the bridge, you can see the remains of some water mills dating from around the 3rd century BC. Come from BC. Most of them existed until the beginning of the 20th century. The last one that remained was in operation until 1985.

A dialect typical of the city is spoken in Dezful .

geography

Dezful is located on the north-south highway from Tehran to Ahvaz , the capital of the province. The main railway line from Tehran to the Persian Gulf is 15 km from Dezful and is on the opposite side of the Dez River .

The city lies at the foot of the Zāgros Mountains .

Economy and Transport

Dezful is the main trade center of North Khusestan and market for the agricultural products of Lorestan Province . The city also has a large cotton textile factory and several small and medium-sized processing industries. The 203 m high Dez Dam , which was completed in 1963, is 32 km upstream of the city. The hydroelectric power station supplies the city with electricity and water and provides irrigation for the nearby sugar cane growing areas .

The city itself does not have a train station . Trains of the Trans-Iranian Railway stop in the neighboring city of Andimeshk .

Dezful Airport

Northrop F-5 in Dezful

In Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's time, US military experts looked after the Iranian military here. In the spring of 1966 the pilots of 89 North American F-86s of the Luftwaffe (Bundeswehr) in the service of Gerhard Mertins , put on Pakistani uniforms and transferred the machines to Pakistan, where the second Indo-Pakistani War had taken place from August to September 1965 , which is why an export license with the correct whereabouts was not issued.

Dezful Vahdati Air Force Base is the fourth air base of the Iranian Air Force and is used by Northrop F-5 . The base was bombed by the Iraqi Air Force in the early stages of the Iran-Iraq war. At the beginning of the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) there is an annual airshow in memory of war heroes. It takes place from March 21st to April 4th and is the only military air show in Iran.

It is also used for domestic passenger flights. There are occasional flight bans for military security reasons. In 2007, the military commander and the governor of Dezful arranged a daily flight connection to Tehran through two Iranian airlines, Iran Air Tour and Aseman.
