Dharma King (Yuan and Ming Dynasties)

Dharma King ( Chinese  法王 , Pinyin fǎwáng ) was the title of some religious leaders of various schools of Tibetan Buddhism during the Mongol and Ming dynasties . In the 7th year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1270), Phagpa was awarded the title of Dharma King for Great Treasures from the Sakya School . In the 5th year of the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty (1407) Deshin Shegpa was awarded the title of Dharma King for Great Treasures from the Karma Kagyu School . In the 11th year of the Yongle Era of the Ming Dynasty (1413), Künga Trashi from the Sakya School was awarded the title of Dharma King for the Great Vehicle . In the 9th year of the Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty (1434), Shakya Yeshe of the Gelug School was awarded the title of Dharma King for Great Kindness . In the Ming Dynasty, the Dharma King was ranked above that of the Imperial Teacher .
