The diademed plover ( Phegornis mitchellii ) is a species of bird from the plover family (Charadriidae). It is monotypical within the genus Phegornis . The relationship of this species to other plovers is uncertain. A 2010 study suggested that it might be related to the Australian yolk.

The species occurs in the Puna-grassland biome of the Andes from Argentina and Chile via Bolivia to Peru . In this habitat he prefers mossy tundra , high meadows , moors and swamps . He is a high-altitude hiker who breeds between 3500 and 5000 m above sea level, but can overwinter at 2000 m.

The diadem sand plover is a small, compact plover with a length of 16.5 to 19 cm and a weight of 28 to 46 g. He has a black head with a white stripe above the eye that meets at the crown, a maroon neck, white throat and chest speckled with black, and gray tops. The wings are short and the flight is wavy. Males and females look alike and the young have a gray head, less pronounced recesses on the front and brown tops.

In the summer months they hatch and lay two olive-gray eggs with black spots in a round grass nest. The down chicks are dark brown, black above and lighter marbled below.

The species is little known and rare and is rarely detected. While its habitat is considered safe, it is possible that overgrazing could pose a threat.
