Diana Elles, Baroness Elles

Diana Louie Elles, Baroness Elles ( July 19, 1921 - October 17, 2009 ) was a British politician . Elles was a representative of Great Britain to the UN . She was a life peer since May 2, 1972 . It was a member of the European Parliament from 1972 to 1975 and from 1979 to 1989 .

Life

Diana Elles was born the daughter of Colonel Stewart Newcombe and was first taught in a private school in London and later attended private schools in Paris and Florence . She then returned to London to attend the University of London , where she graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts in French and Italian . From 1941 to 1945 she served for the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) as one of the women in Bletchley Park at the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) there and was made an officer in 1944.

In 1956, she was admitted to the Lincoln's Inn law firm as a Kennington volunteer. She worked there until 1972 when she attended the General Assembly of the United Nations as the representative of Great Britain . From 1973 to 1974 she was a member of a committee that was directed against discrimination. From 1973 to 1979 she was chairman of the European Community of Women (European Union of Women). She was also the representative of Great Britain in the European Parliament from 1972 to 1975 and from 1979 to 1989.

She had been married to Neil Patrick Moncrieff Elles since 1945, with whom she had a son and a daughter. Elles died on October 17, 2009 at the age of 88.
