features

Pinus greggii is a medium-sized tree that reaches heights of 10 to 25 meters. The crown is irregularly rounded. The lower branches directed horizontally to downwards. In solitary trees, the branches are often close to the ground, the crown is dense and bushy. In mature trees, the bark is thick, gray-brown in the lower crown area and divided into scaly plates by deep, vertical cracks. The bark on young trees is gray-brown and smooth. Your crown is open and unevenly branched. The branches are slender, upright, smooth and gray-brown.

The needle leaves stand in bundles on short shoots in threes; the sheaths are pale gray-brown, 5 to 10 mm long, persistent, rarely sloping. The needle leaves are slender to medium thick, upright, 10 to 15 centimeters long and light green. The edge is finely sawn. There are two to six resin channels. There are two adjacent but separated vascular bundles .

The cones stand individually or in groups of three to six, even more, on slender stems. Their cone scales are wide and have a narrow thorn.

The cones are oblong-conical, yellow-brown, slightly curved. They are 10 to 14 inches long. They are in groups of three to six, or eight, often clustered around a node . As the branch thickens, the wood sometimes partially encloses them. The cone scales are hard and stiff.

The seeds are small, 5 to 6 millimeters long, dark brown. The seed wing is around 15 millimeters long.

The wood is not very resinous and is pale yellow. It is hammered locally for firewood, pit wood, and lumber.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Distribution and locations

Pinus greggii has a very limited distribution. It occurs in dispersed populations in the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains of Mexico.

This species grows at altitudes between 1300 and 3000 meters in areas with 600 to 900 mm annual precipitation , sometimes also 1000 to 1500 mm. Frost occurs regularly in the higher areas in December and January.
