Dianthus juniperinus is a species from the genus of carnations ( Dianthus ) in the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

features

Dianthus juniperinus is a perennial dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 3 to 30 (50) centimeters. The leaves are needle-shaped, pointed, often more or less rolled up, leathery and measure 10 to 40 × 0.5 to 3 millimeters. At least in the upper leaves there are strong marginal nerves or a thick margin. There are four to eight outer sepals. These are obovate or sometimes obverse heart shaped.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Occurrence

Dianthus juniperinus is endemic to Crete . The species grows in limestone crevices at altitudes of 600 to 1750 meters.

Systematics

Seven subspecies are distinguished within the species:

  • Dianthus juniperinus subsp. aciphyllus (Sieber ex Ser.) Turland : The flower shoots reach lengths of 11 to 30 centimeters. The sheets are linear and 1 to 1.9 millimeters wide. The petal plate is 7 to 11 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs in the Dikti Mountains at altitudes of 800 to 1700 meters.
  • Dianthus juniperinus subsp. bauhinorum (Greuter) Turland : The flower shoots reach lengths of 13 to 30 (up to 50) centimeters. The sheets are linear to linear-lanceolate and 1.6 to 3.1 millimeters wide. The petal plate is 8 to 14 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs in the eastern part of Psiloritis and on the Giouchtas at altitudes of 500 to 800 meters.
  • Dianthus juniperinus subsp. heldreichii Greuter : The flower shoots reach lengths of 6 to 13 centimeters. The leaves measure (13 to) 15 to 25 × 0.5 to 1.4 millimeters. The flowers are bright pink. The calyx is (10) 12 to 13 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs in the gorges of the eastern part of the Lefka Ori at altitudes of 600 to 650 meters. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.
  • Dianthus juniperinus subsp. idaeus Turland : The flower shoots reach lengths of 9.5 to 13.5 centimeters. The petal plate is 6 to 7 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs on the western and southern edges of Psiloritis at altitudes of 600 meters.
  • Dianthus juniperinus Sm. Subsp. juniperinus : The flower shoots reach lengths of 8 to 20 centimeters. The petal plate is 3 to 4.5 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs in the western part of the Lefka Ori at altitudes of 1400 to 1750 meters. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.
  • Dianthus juniperinus subsp. kavusicus Turland : The flower shoots reach lengths of 8.5 to 10 centimeters. The leaves measure 17 to 26 × 1 to 1.3 millimeters. The inflorescence consists of nine or ten flowers that bloom at the same time. The chalice is (13 to) 14 millimeters long. The crown plate is 6 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs in Afendis Kavousi at altitudes of 900 meters.
  • Dianthus juniperinus subsp. pulviniformis (Greuter) Turland : The flower shoots reach lengths of 3 to 8.5 centimeters. The leaves measure 10 to 20 × 0.4 to 0.8 millimeters. The inflorescence is one to four flowers. The chalice is 7 to 9 millimeters long. The petal plate is 4 millimeters long. This subspecies occurs on Kedros and Krioneritis at altitudes of 500 to 1500 meters.
