Dichodontium is a genus of deciduous moss from the family Aongstroemiaceae .

features

The plants form yellowish or green to dark green pads or loose lawns. The upright, 1 to 5 centimeters large trunks are simply or slightly branched and rhizoid-tomentose below. A central strand is present in the trunk cross-section. The leaves protruding from the upright base, with a rib reaching almost to the tip, are lanceolate to tongue-shaped, the tip is broadly rounded to pointed, the leaf margins are toothed above. Leaf cells are rectangular on the leaf base next to the rib, otherwise roundish-square and nipple or papillae. The spore capsule with 16 peristome teeth split into two teeth is erect or curved, usually asymmetrical and ovoid to cylindrical.

The mosses are widespread in the temperate to subarctic zone of the northern hemisphere.

Systematics

The affiliation of individual species to the genus Dichodontium was subject to major changes in the past. In the revision of the genus Dichodontium by J.-P. Frahm et al. (1998) reduced the number of species from 8 to 3. AJE Smith (2004), in turn, incorporated Dicranella palustris into the genus Dichodontium (as Dichodontium palustre ). Recently (following the Stech & Frey system) Dichodontium palustre has been placed in the newly created genus Diobelonella and is now called Diobelonella palustris (Dicks.) Ochyra.

European representatives of the genus Dichodontium are:
