The Aongstroemiaceae are a family of deciduous mosses from the order Dicranales .

features

The plants are small to medium in size and form loose to dense lawns. A central strand is present in the trunk cross-section. The leaves are usually broad with a blunt tip, the leaf margins are whole or slightly serrate to toothed. The lamina cells are variable in shape, usually smooth. Leaf-wing cells are not differentiated. The rib is simple, sometimes protruding briefly.

The species are diocesan . An elongated, straight or curved seta carries a smooth capsule of variable shape. A peristome is either present or absent. The lid is conical or beaked, the kalyptra cap-shaped.

The family is widespread in the northern and southern hemispheres, mainly in the northern-temperate and tropical-montane zones.

Systematics

Most of the family members of the Aongstroemiaceae were traditionally assigned to the Dicranaceae . The delimitation according to Frey & Stech is based on molecular data; according to morphological characteristics, the family is only poorly defined.
