Dick's Picks Volume 16 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs on the album were recorded on November 8, 1969 in the Fillmore Auditorium (often incorrectly given as Fillmore West ) in San Francisco , California , and released on March 7, 2000 under the company's own label, Grateful Dead Records . On November 7th, the band also performed in the Fillmore Auditorium. However, no material was used from that evening.

In total, the Dead performed 44 times in the Fillmore Auditorium, but not a single time after December 21, 1969. Owsley Stanley , the long-time sound engineer and initial patron of the band, appeared again as producer and over time several albums for Grateful Dead produced.

The last studio album was Aoxomoxoa , of which the songs “St. Stephen "and" China Cat Sunflower ", both of which belong to the standard live repertoire. Two days after this concert, the live album Live / Dead was released on November 10, 1969 , which, due to the fact that it also consists of concert recordings and thus also contains popular live pieces, has many songs in common with Dick's Picks Volume 16 . These include "Dark Star", "St. Stephen "," The Eleven "," Turn On Your Lovelight "," Feedback "and" And We Bid You Goodnight ". From the next studio album, Workingman's Dead (June 1970), several songs have already been played and tested live with "Uncle John's Band", "High Time", "Dire Wolf", "Cumberland Blues", "Easy Wind" and "Casey Jones".

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999. Then David Lemieux took over the archive. Dick's Picks Volume 15 was the first album to be released after his death. But he had already selected songs for Dick's Picks Volume 16 . Both albums are dedicated to him and include two of his favorite shows.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

" This release was digitally mastered directly from the original half track 7.5 ips analog tape. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some minor technical anomalies and the unavoidable effects of the ravages of time. "

criticism

In general, Dick's Picks Volume 16 received good reviews. The album received 4.5 stars out of 5 from both All Music Guide and The Music Box .
