Dick's Picks Volume 17 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .
history
The songs on the album were recorded on September 25, 1991 in Boston Garden , Boston , Massachusetts , and released in April 2000 under their own label, Grateful Dead Records . In addition to the recordings from that evening, the album contains two songs from March 31, 1991 from a show at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro , North Carolina .
The Deads performed 24 times at the Boston Garden and seven times at the Greensboro Coliseum during their career. In 1991 they performed six times in a row at the Boston Garden and twice in a row at the Greensboro Coliseum. The producer was the sound engineer Dan Healy , who produced and co-produced several albums during his time with the Deads. The performance on September 25 took place as part of the Rex Foundation , which was launched by the members of the Deads.
The last studio album before the concert and in general was the often criticized album Built to Last , from which no song was adopted into the standard live repertoire. That evening, however, the song " Victim or the Crime " was added to the setlist. As from the previous live album Without a Net , the classic " Walkin 'Blues " was also used, the song " Eyes of the World " and the medley " Help on the Way / Slipknot! / Franklin's Tower ". Otherwise the songs come from different CDs and songwriters.
The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999. Then David Lemieux took over the archive. As a reminder, the words “Latvala” are always hidden on the cover or inlay of an album from the series.
Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:
" This release was digitally mastered from the original 2 track digital audio tapes, and was not recorded with the intent of producing a commercial release. It may, therefore, contain some minor anomalies, although we have aimed to make it just exactly perfect. "
criticism
In general, Dick's Picks Volume 17 received average ratings. The album received 3 stars out of All Music Guide and 3.5 out of 5 stars from The Music Box .
