Without a Net is a live album by the band Grateful Dead .
history
The album contains songs from live performances from October 1989 to April 1990 and was in September 1990 on the label Arista Records released. The album was released in three forms: a double CD , a double cassette or a triple LP .
Since the last album, Built to Last, did not turn out to be the success they had hoped for, the band returned to their live qualities. So Without a Net the first of eight live albums to death by the band leader Jerry Garcia should be published in August 1995th Even after his death, the remaining band members did not record any further studio albums, but published compilations of old live shows or new ones under other names. Without a Net is also the last album in the series with Garcia, which was released immediately after the tour. All other albums contain songs from older performances all the way back to the 70s.
Without a Net is the band's first live album in nine years. That or the last album were the recordings for Reckoning and Dead Set . It is also the first album that was recorded directly for CD , so that the band could take advantage of the longer playing time. In contrast to other live bands, Grateful Dead has always used technological advances for their recordings, which was also due to the fact that their improvisation phases were often too long for one side of a record.
After Europe '72 applies Without a Net as a valuable sounding live album and reached within two months Gold status . But unlike Europe '72 , Without a Net does not contain any new material. Except for two songs, the others are already on other albums or are part of the band's live repertoire . These two songs are cover songs. Dear Mr. Fantasy comes from the band Traffic from their debut album Mr. Fantasy . Walkin 'Blues dates back to 1936 and was written by Robert Johnson .
The cover was again by the psychedelic artist Rick Griffin .
The album is dedicated to Clifton Hanger . This is the name Brent Mydland entered in hotels during the tour. Without a Net was the last album with Mydland. He died while the album was being edited on July 26, 1990 from an overdose of a cocaine - morphine mixture . First he was replaced by Bruce Hornsby and finally by Vince Welnick .
