Dick Howard (athlete)

Dick Howard (actually Richard Wayne Howard , born August 22, 1935 in Oklahoma City , † November 9, 1967 in Hollywood ) was an American hurdler who specialized in the 400-meter distance .

At the Pan American Games in Chicago in 1959 he won the silver medal and at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 with his personal best of 49.7 s, the bronze medal behind his compatriots Glenn Davis (49.3 s) and Clifton Cushman (49.6 s) .

In 1959, starting for the University of New Mexico , he became NCAA champion in the 440 yard hurdles and US champion in the 400 m hurdles. In 1960 he won the national title in the 200 m hurdles.

Dick Howard died of a heroin overdose .
