Clifton Cushman

Clifton Cushman ( Clifton Emmett "Cliff" Cushman ; born June 2, 1938 in Cedarville , Michigan , † September 25, 1966 in Hải Phòng ) was an American hurdler who had specialized in the 400-meter distance .

At the Pan American Games in Chicago in 1959 he won the bronze medal and at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 with his personal best of 49.6 seconds the silver medal behind his compatriot Glenn Davis (49.3 seconds) and ahead of Dick Howard , who with 49, 7 s completed the US triple success.

In 1960, starting for the University of Kansas , he became NCAA champion in the 400 m hurdles and in the following year US champion in the 440 yard hurdles.

In 1961 he enlisted in the United States Air Force .

In the US elimination match for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he fell in the final in a promising position while lying on the last hurdle and did not reach the goal.

On September 25, 1966, he was shot down in his plane during the Vietnam War . His body could not be recovered. He was initially listed as missing and then classified as killed in 1975 .
