The United States Geological Survey mapped them using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1959 to 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1966 after Donald T. Dickson, glaciologist of the United States Antarctic Research Program on the Byrd- Station from 1962 to 1963.
