François Diday
François Diday (born February 10, 1802 in Geneva , † November 28, 1877 there ) was a Swiss painter.
Life
François Diday received drawing lessons in the class of Louis-Théodore Constantin-Hiertzeler from 1813 to 1816 and then at the art school of the Societe des Arts in Geneva. He sold colored views to tourists and traders. In 1818/19 he made a trip through Switzerland and Savoy. In 1823 he worked for a few months in Antoine Jean Gros' studio in Paris and then settled in his hometown, where he also made his debut in 1823 in the salon of the Geneva Societe des Arts. He specialized in the representation of the Swiss Alpine landscape. His pictures are characterized by “great conception, truthfulness of presentation and excellent coloring”. This characterizes him as a representative of the transition period from romanticism to naturalism .
He was u. a. the teacher of Alexandre Calame , Charles Giron , Charles-Samuel Delapeine and Charles Vuillermet .
