Life
Charles Vuillermet was a son of the barometer dealer Samuel Constant Vuillermet and Catherine nee. Träxel. He received his first lessons from the graphic artist Jean Bryner (1816–1905) in Lausanne. This was followed by studies in the studios of Rudolf Koller in Zurich, François Diday in Geneva and Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris as well as at the art academy in Munich (1868). The portrait de MS-C established his reputation as a portrait painter . - a portrait of his father exhibited in the Salon de Paris in 1880 . The series Le Vieux-Lausanne , created together with his brother Charles Joseph (1846–1913) between 1889 and 1915, made him known as a landscape painter.
In his commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage, he initiated the Commission du Vieux Lausanne alongside Louis Gagnaux in 1898 , from which the Musée de l'Association du Vieux-Lausanne (today's Musée historique de Lausanne ) emerged. He was a member of the editorial committee of the Swiss Artists' Lexicon, edited by Carl Brun , and the author of numerous articles for this work. He was also a member of the Federal Art Commission from 1893 to 1897 and again from 1905 to 1908, and its president in 1907/08.
In 1896 he took part in the National Exhibition in Geneva and in 1900 at the Paris World Exhibition . He was a friend of the painter Wilhelm Georg Ritter .
«Charles François Vuillermet […] is known as one of the most faithful witnesses to the destruction of the remains of medieval Lausanne in the last decade of the 19th century. With pencil and brush, he documented buildings and streets that disappeared before his eyes, becoming a tireless champion of historical heritage. Documentation of his commitment is the present work.
