Wilhelm Ritter came to the Willingshausen painters' colony (Hesse) for the first time in 1892 . During his creative phase there, he lived in the Forsthof near the forester Hücker. In Willingshausen he mainly worked as a draftsman for Schwalm traditional costumes and Schwalm landscapes. In 1910 he lived in the Schwalm village of Wiera .

He was artistically active as a painter and draftsman. From his Swiss painter friend Charles François Vuillermet he had learned to reduce the draft of a picture to the size of a postage stamp in order to achieve the greatest simplicity and clarity in the composition. His work is characterized by conscientious, realistic representation. His balanced compositions mostly show romantic architectural scenes with small-town life and landscapes.

Wilhelm Georg Ritter was a member of the German Association of Artists . Ritter's summer studio in Moritzburg is a listed building ( Bahnhofstrasse 8 ).
