Didier-Pierre Diderot was the youngest son of the wealthy Jansenist cutler Didier Diderot and his wife Angélique Vigneron (October 12, 1677 - October 1, 1748). She was the daughter of the tanner , tanneur , François Vigneron († 1679) and Jeanne Aramite Humblot († 1710) from Langres. Both married on Tuesday, January 19, 1712 in Chassigny . Didier-Pierre Diderot's father was close to the Jansenist movement in the Catholic Church . The couple had three sons and four daughters; the first son died one day after his birth on November 5, 1712, followed by Denis (October 5, 1713 - July 31, 1784) and Didier-Pierre.

The brothers began their post-school journey both as Abbé . The sisters were Denise (January 27, 1715– March 26, 1797), Catherine (1716–1718), Catherine (1719– October 25, 1735), and Angélique Diderot (April 3, 1720–1749). Angélique Diderot joined the Ursuline Order.

His maternal uncle was Canon Charles Vigneron at the Saint-Mammès de Langres Cathedral . Langres, an important center of Jansenism, had around 8,000 inhabitants.

Didier-Pierre Diderot attended a Jesuit school in Langres, collège des Jésuites , from 1733 to 1743 and then from 1743 to 1744 he stayed in Paris at a Catholic seminary , seminaire diocésain, and also studied law . He finished his studies on Friday December 9th, 1746 and went back to Langres. There he entered the service in 1747 as secretary of the diocese of Langres charge de secrétaire de l'Évêché and then he oversaw the affairs of the diocese in an official capacity until 1759 as promoter de l'officialité diocésaine . The bishop at this time was His Excellency Gilbert Gaspard de Montmorin de Saint-Hérem (1691-1770). Gilbert Montmorin was appointed Archbishop of the Diocese of Langres on December 1, 1734; a function that was then fully fulfilled from 1735 onwards. In 1767 Didier-Pierre Diderot then rose in the church hierarchy to the canon chanoine de la cathédrale . During the time of his ministry, the promotion and establishment of Christian schools was particularly important to him.

His relationship with his older brother Denis Diderot was fraught with conflict, as expressed in the Lettre à mon frère (1760). Didier-Pierre Diderot answered the invitation to the wedding of his niece Marie-Angéliques rudely and did not come. On November 14th, 1772 there was a final break between the brothers.
