action

A love story develops between the camera student Edo and the drama student Ipah, both of whom are studying at the art college, which has to be measured against outdated moral concepts, class arrogance, corruption and the distribution of national wealth. Ipah's father doesn't think much of Edo, whose father worked on the railroad and died in an accident. Since then, he has been helping his family to secure an income, even if he has to work in another city. He leaves college - and Ipah - but they stay true to themselves and there is a happy ending.

background

Indonesia has always found it difficult to develop an independent national film culture; The influence of films from the USA and cheap productions from India, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which offered popular cinema clichés, was too great. To counteract this, the country tried to establish national film funding that was based on European auteur cinema and focused on films that were supposed to combine pop culture with realistic and socially critical material.

criticism

The Fischer Film Almanach 1983 judged that the film would certainly meet the requirements of the new Indonesian film funding without neglecting the viewing habits of the Indonesian audience. The film is a "precise description of the milieu revealing the living conditions of the Indonesian middle class". The lexicon of international film saw a "[n] aives melodrama with some tentative socially critical approaches", which was "awkward in design and dramaturgy, but appealing as an example of Indonesian film culture".
