The Sun That Deceives Us - The Exodus ( Russian Утомлённые солнцем 2: Предстояние Utomljonnyje solnzem 2: Predstojanije ) is a Russian drama directed by Nikita Mikhalkov from 2010 and the sequel to his film The Sun, the 1994 sequel . In Germany, the film was released on September 6, 2012 and the third part on November 8, 2012.
action
The film begins in June 1941. The plot takes up the characters from the first part, but their fate has been completely rewritten. Colonel Kotow (shot in the first film in 1936) is still alive and sitting in the gulag. His daughter suddenly grew up (born in the first film in 1930). She was hiding from the NKVD . Mitja (death by suicide in the first part) is still alive. He carries out the orders of Stalin's terror regime and has a secure position in the secret service. He successfully turned Kotow's wife against her husband for showing her the confessions with his signature. She does not realize that these confessions were forced. Stalin, who is attacked by his former ally Hitler , tries to mobilize the entire Soviet population. Kotow finds himself a simple soldier in a punitive battalion on the Russian Western Front. Nadia works as a nurse at the front.
reception
The film was panned by both Russian and Western reviews because the discontinuity of the plot is perceived as absurd. All the storylines from the first film were thrown overboard.
In Russia, the negative portrayal of the Red Army has been criticized. Western critics accused the film of having been shot too much to Putin's taste. It is also propaganda for Orthodox Christianity. A Russian critic, on the other hand, praised the portrayal of the Red Army, which was overwhelmed by the war situation because of Stalin's dilettantism. At $ 55 million in production costs, the film was the most expensive Russian film ever made. Despite strong government advertising, it became one of the biggest flops in Russian film history.
Despite negative criticism, the film was nominated for the Palme d'Or and received a long ovation. In 2010 it was shown in Cannes and nominated by the Russian side as a candidate for the Oscar abroad .
