The hour of the patriots (English original title: Patriot Games ) is the title of a novel by Tom Clancy from 1987. In the same year, the novel was also published in German.

It is the first chronologically novel in which Jack Ryan, a CIA agent who was introduced by Clancy in Hunt for Red October , appears in the lead role.

Jack Ryan, a professor of military history, is doing research in London with his family. As unsuspecting passers-by, they are caught in a terrorist attack perpetrated by a splinter group of the IRA , the Ulster Liberation Army (ULA), on the family of the British heir to the throne. Ryan manages to thwart the attack, but now he and his family are no longer safe of their lives. The ULA killers pursue him in the United States, involve his wife and daughter in a serious traffic accident and finally attack Ryan's property on Chesapeake Bay . However, Ryan and his helpers manage to fend off the attack.

In 1992, the original book was made into a film with minor changes (instead of the Prince of Wales , a fictional lord is attacked) with Harrison Ford in the role of Jack Ryan.
