The Dolle (also rudder stock or Oarlock called) securing the serving rudder ( Skull or belt ) on either the board edge ( gunwale ) or on the boom of a rowing boat . In rowing boats ( boat ), there are various Doll types: Two vertical pins, between which moves the skulls are, or connects a pin with a leather strap, the skull and Dolle, or a metal ring with a Doll pin through which the skull is inserted, or a U-shaped piece of metal with a pin, the oarlock pin , which is inserted into a hole in the ship's side. The oarlocks for boats are usually made of wood.

Sport rowing boats

In sport rowing boats the oarlock is U-shaped. One leg is rotatably mounted on a boom with the oarlock pin. Whereas previously the oarlocks of a bronze - alloy passed, are today usually plastic used -Dollen. In order to keep the oars firmly in the oarlock, the oarlocks are often locked with a safety clip (with a screw lock). If an oar should slip out of the oarlock while rowing , there is a risk of the rowing boat capsizing .

The oarlocks of modern sport rowing boats are also configurable to adapt them to the rower. Usually the following can be changed:

  • As Doll spacing the horizontal distance between the keel of the boat and the center of the pin is referred to Doll. The value to be set depends on the boat class and the performance level of the rowers and is set on the boom.
  • The oarlock height denotes the vertical adjustment of the oarlock on the oarlock pin, which u. a. is adapted to the body weight of the rower. The oarlock height is set using spacers on the oarlock pin or additionally using the arm.
  • The contact angle is the angle by which the vertical surface against which the sculls or oars rest when the oar stroke is tilted from the vertical. The angle is typically around 4 ° and can be adjusted using interchangeable wedges or eccentric inserts. A stable water position of the rudder blade in the draft is only achieved through a positive contact angle .

Adjusting rowing boats (“trimming”) requires a certain amount of experience.

The Nydam ship (approx. 320 AD), a forerunner of the Viking ship, found in a bog in South Jutland, Denmark, used so-called keipen as an abutment for the straps.
