occupation

The New Year's Eve bet is a silent film operetta that the Deutsche Lichtspielopern-Gesellschaft (Delog) realized in Berlin in 1919 based on a patent from Jacob Beck. Soubrette Molly Wessely played the leading role . Alongside her, Henry Bender and Paul Westermeier determined the plot. The music was composed by Jean Gilbert (Max Winterfeld).

The New Year's Eve bet was the second attempt by Jacob Beck's Delog-Gesellschaft to establish its own genre, “film operetta” by developing its own material and compositions , after Wer in der Jugend does not kiss (1918).

background

The manuscript and lyrics were written by Willi Wolff and Martin Zickel . Max Fassbender was at the camera . The conductor also photographed was Georg Enders.

The Reichsfilmzensur imposed a youth ban on the film on May 30, 1921 under the number 2567. A press screening took place on January 12, 1919 in Berlin's Kurfürstendamm UT . The film premiered on February 21, 1919 in the premiere cinema of the UFA Tauentzienpalast .

reception

The New Years Eve bet was discussed in:

  • The Film No. 51, 1918
  • [Das] living picture (lb) No. 20/21, 1919
  • Kino-Letters No. 6, 1919
  • Cinematograph No. 620, 1919
  • Cinematograph No. 629, 1919
  • Cinematograph No. 630, 1919
  • Cinematograph No. 634, 1919
  • Cinematograph No. 642/3, 1919

The creators of the production were just as unsatisfied with the result as the critics. Composer Gilbert and his librettists Wolff and Zickel distanced themselves from her even before the premiere; The critics found the direction, performance and equipment to be inadequate, especially the music and hits. The film critic Egon Jacobsohn wrote: “In any case, this operetta is a failure”.

The film was withdrawn from the schedule after just one week.
