Diedrich Wilhelm Schroeder (born April 16, 1916 in Groß Augstumalmoor, Heydekrug district , East Prussia ; † March 2, 1988 in Kiel ) was a German soil scientist.

Life

In the post-war period, Schroeder, son of a moor vogt, began studying agriculture at the Georg-August University of Göttingen , which he completed in 1949 with the main diploma examination, and received his doctorate in 1951. rer. hoard. at the Technical University of Hanover with a dissertation on the mineralogical composition of white jurassic limes. There he was given a teaching position in the field of plant nutrition in 1951. Just three years later (1954) he qualified as a professor in Hanover in the fields of soil science and plant nutrition with a highly regarded study of weathering and soil formation on loess profiles . In 1956 he accepted an appointment at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . For almost thirty years he worked here as professor for plant nutrition and soil science. In 1962/63 and 1970/71 he was rector of the CAU.

In Kiel, Schroeder first worked on current problems with the supply of potassium and magnesium in soils and plants, and also on the properties and importance of clay minerals and radioisotopes in soils. Furthermore, he dealt with the material dynamics and genesis of soils in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as with questions of regional soil science and with new methods of soil classification . With his pocket book Soil Science in Keywords , which was first published in 1969 and has been published repeatedly , he methodically embarked on new methods of conveying soil science knowledge.

In several contributions, Schroeder dealt with fundamental questions of scientific development, including a. in 1962 published The soil science as pure and applied natural science . As an emeritus he also dealt with the history of his field. His studies on the soil science aspects in the life work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and on Alexander von Humboldt's importance in the history of the development of soil science are noteworthy.

Schroeder received the Paul Wagner Prize in 1954 . Since 1962 he was a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in Halle / S. and from 1974 to 1981 President of the German Soil Science Society.

His grave is in the Eichhof park cemetery .
