Diego Lorenzi

Diego Lorenzi FDP (born November 14, 1939 in Valdastico near Folgaria , Vicenza Province , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic priest and was the private secretary of Pope John Paul I.

Life

Lorenzi, who comes from the Veneto region , received the sacrament of ordination on May 20, 1967 and joined the Order of the Sons of Divine Providence. In 1976 he became secretary to Albino Cardinal Luciani, then Patriarch of Venice . In this capacity he accompanied Cardinal Luciani to Rome in August 1978 when he was at the conclave after the death of Paul VI. participated. According to Lorenzi, he was not surprised at his election as Pope. In the Vatican he was initially supported by the Irish Monsignor John Magee , the former private secretary of Paul VI. Lorenzi had asked John Paul I himself to do so because he was new to the Vatican.

From 1996 he carried out missionary activities in the Philippines and Italy. Diego Lorenzi now lives at the San Carlo religious institute in Erba in the province of Como .
