Diesel motorcycles are motorcycles with a diesel engine . Compared to a gasoline engine , a diesel engine runs more restlessly and - with the same output - is heavier. Due to these two disadvantages of the diesel engine in particular, it has so far only played a niche role in the motorcycle sector. It is used in single pieces, individual conversions or small series.

For a long time, diesel motorcycle construction has dealt with rather low performance increases. The Indian origin began at around 4.5 kW (6 PS), the first European prototypes had around 6 kW (8 PS). Today the single-cylinder have 8 kW (11 HP) and the two-cylinder 15 kW (20 HP).

Private enthusiasts have pursued the idea for years and sometimes found excellent solutions using industrial and small car engines. From small single-cylinder industrial diesels in vintage motorcycle frames to modern vehicle engines in modified series vehicles or even completely custom-made frames, enthusiasts have put a large number of roadworthy motorcycles on their wheels. The output ranges from 4.5 to 82  kilowatts (6 to 112  horsepower ).

Civil series and small series models

Royal Enfield

Taurus 325 diesel

Royal Enfield was the only manufacturer who for years offered a diesel motorcycle with a single-cylinder stationary engine for agriculture based on the outdated concept of the Enfield Bullet , in which the engine and gearbox housing are separate: the "Enfield Taurus", the one for the modern Road traffic with the 5 kW (7 HP) engine is only suitable to a limited extent. The Taurus was a motorcycle for India and under Indian conditions. There are no longer any imported Taurus.

Summer diesel 462

Sommer-Hatz-Diesel

The Sommer Motorradmanufaktur in Geyern offers a diesel motorcycle with an EU operating permit. The single-cylinder diesel engine from the manufacturer Hatz is installed in a Royal Enfield chassis. It has an output of 8 kW (11 PS) and reaches a top speed of 105 km / h with a consumption of approx. 2.5 l / 100 km. An Enfield frame has not been used since 2011, but a self-made frame that is made in Germany.

Enfield Diesel 440 / Enfield V2 Diesel

Royal Enfield Diesel 440

The motorcycle dealer Beckedorf from Reichelsheim offers a diesel motorcycle based on Royal Enfield with a single-cylinder engine from Lombardini. The current version is equipped with a 15LD440 engine, which has a capacity of 442 cm³ and an output of 8 kW and which now also has a balance shaft and hydraulic valve lifters . A more powerful version is the Enfield V2 Diesel with a Punsun two-cylinder engine (PS836A) that develops 22 HP at 3600 rpm from a displacement of 836 cm³.

Dieselwiesel

Another diesel motorcycle is produced and sold in Germany by Motorrad Leitner in Nittendorf under the name Dieselwiesel . The nominal power is 7 kW (10 HP), the maximum speed is given as approx. 110 km / h. Consumption should be 1.5 to 2 l / 100 km.

EVA Products: Track T-800 CDI

Track T-800CDI, diesel powered motorcycle from Holland

The Dutch manufacturer EVA Products BV produced the Track T-800 CDI motorcycle . The motorcycle has a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine with 800 cm³ displacement, which is normally used in a Smart. Production stopped in 2012.

Neander 1400 turbodiesel

Prototype of the Neander 1400 TurboDiesel in a chopper version

The Neander 1400 turbodiesel comes from the manufacturer Neander Motors AG in Kiel. According to the manufacturer, the two-cylinder turbodiesel engine has a displacement of 1340 cm³ and delivers a nominal output of 82 kW (112 hp) at 4,200 rpm. The maximum torque is specified as 214 Nm at 2,600 rpm. The engine accelerates the motorcycle to a speed of 100 km / h in approx. 4.5 s. For this purpose, the company developed low-cylinder, high-performance diesel engines with double crankshafts. The turbo diesel motorcycle is equipped with common rail injection . The former page neander-motorcycle.com is no longer available. This motorcycle is currently not available and, according to the manufacturer, no inquiries regarding this can be answered at the moment, as the focus is currently on the development of an outboard motor.

Shockster Turbo Diesel

The Shockster Turbo Diesel is the first and only turbo-diesel motorcycle developed and approved in Austria that is fully suitable for everyday use. The vehicle has a displacement of 1500 cm³, an output of approx. 59 kW and a torque of approx. 150 Nm at 2500 / min.

Thunder Star 1200 TDI

The Thunder Star 1200 TDI comes from the Dutch manufacturer Star Twin Motors . An engine from a VW Lupo 1.2l TDI works in the Thunder Star.

Others

There are also other providers who offer conversions on the basis of frames that have already been approved. The oldest prototype for a diesel motorcycle made in Europe, which was subsequently produced in small series, was realized around 1980 by the Englishman Ernie Dorsett. His Matchless Robin later became the Enfield Robins, which were sold in Germany by the late Gerd Engmann.

Military use

Hayes Diversified Technologies

After several years of engine development at Cranfield University , the M1030M1 was introduced. It is produced on the basis of a modified KLR650 by Hayes Diversified Technologies . The top speed is around 90 mph (145 km / h) and the average fuel economy is 96 mpg-USA (2.5 l per 100 km, 115 mpg-IMP) at 55 mph (89 km / h). M1030M1 motorcycles have successfully competed in the British National Rally and Bonneville Speed Trials . The US Marine Corps bought 440 models of the M1030M1 under the name M1030M1 JP8 / Diesel . As the M1030M1E AVTUR / Diesel military motorcycle, it is also sold to Great Britain and European NATO countries. A civilian version, called the D650A1 Bulldog , was originally planned for March 2006, but due to increased military demand for the M1030M1, production of the civilian Bulldog has been indefinitely delayed.

In summer 2010, the 1030M2, an important upgrade of the M1030M1, was presented at the French armaments exhibition Eurosatory . The main change is an improved 670 cc multi-fuel engine that produces 20% more power. A patented technology called MAC-C1 enables the engine to use not only standard automotive gasoline and truck diesel fuel, but also five types of kerosene and even heavier biodiesel based on vegetable oil. The civil version of this machine is expected to be the Altius Scimitar, an Indian license production.

Faired and faired Hayes diesel motorcycles won second and fourth places in the 2011 Mid-Ohio Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge .

Research in higher education

EDIMO at the diesel motorcycle meeting 2005 in Hamm

Between 2000 and 2005, students at Esslingen University developed a motorcycle prototype with a smart diesel engine. The project, named EDIMO (Esslinger Diesel-Motorrad), was presented to the public in 2004, is street legal and work was finally carried out on a particle filter.
