Dieter Gänkler (born October 19, 1935 ) is a former German soccer player. From 1956 to 1960 he was active for SC Progress Weissenfels in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

Gänkler made his debut in the league for SC progress Weissenfels at the age of 20 in the first game of the second half of the season in 1956 (calendar year season). He was used as a replacement for the center forward Karl Meyer, who was eliminated at Weißenfels . Since this position was later taken over by Eberhard Dallagrazia , Gänkler only played five more league games by the end of the season, but only one more from the start. In 1957, Gänkler still did not make the leap into the starting eleven of SC Progress. At the beginning of the first half of the league, he represented right-back Paul Reinhardt in two games, after which he stepped in for the injured Dallagrazia five times as a center forward in point games. In his first season point game as a center forward, he scored three goals in a 4-0 home win over SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt , his first but also his last goals in the league. In the second half of the 1957 league season he was only used in three point games. In the 1958 season, Gänkler made his breakthrough as a regular player. He took over the position of right defender from retired Paul Reinhardt and played all 26 point games in this position. He was able to continue this series in 1959. Then it looked like 1960, because Gänkler was up to one game up to the 16th matchday in every point game in the Weißenfelser Elf. Then he injured himself so badly that he could not be used until the end of the season and was then removed from the team. After 88 league appearances and five goals, his competitive sports career was over.
