Dieter Leistner (born November 2, 1952 in Salzgitter-Bad ) is a German photographer and emeritus professor of photography at the University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt . He is one of the most important German architectural photographers and a member of the professional association of independent photographers and film designers (BFF).

life and work

After a few years as a carpenter, Leistner studied photo engineering and visual communication in Cologne and Wuppertal from 1978 to 1983 , as well as photography at the Folkwang School in Essen with Robert Lebeck and Reinhart Wolf . In his thesis he devoted himself to the extensive series bathing temples strictly frontal interior views of public indoor swimming pools of the Wilhelminian era and Art Nouveau. Another series of photographs by Dieter Leistner are his so-called Aufblicke . These architectural shots were taken with a steep look up into the photographic image, thereby revealing the shapes and structures of the buildings from a highly abstract perspective.

In 2006 Dieter Leistner had the opportunity to take a photographic and artistic inventory of North Korea and to photograph the public space in Pyongyang . In 2012 he then traveled to the South Korean capital Seoul and recorded comparable locations there in order to compare images from North and South Korea in the subsequent book KOREA - KOREA .

Since 1978, Leistner has also been taking photos of people waiting at various stops in many countries. With this long-term comparison, he wants to investigate global similarities and differences and question temporal and technical developments.

Dieter Leistner has been working as a freelance photographer since 1982. After teaching at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences from 1983 to 1995, he was Professor of Photography at the Faculty of Design at the University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt from 1999 to 2018.

Dieter Leistner's photographic work appeared early in print media such as PHOTO TECHNIK INTERNATIONAL and has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He repeatedly works with leading architects of contemporary architecture. In the past, these were, for example, Gottfried Böhm , Gustav Peichl , Richard Meier , Thomas Herzog , Heinz Bienefeld , Johannes Peter Hölzinger and Oswald Mathias Ungers .
