Klaus Klemp

Klaus Klemp (born June 24, 1954 in Dortmund ) is a German design and art historian and exhibition curator . He is a full professor at the Offenbach University of Design and honorary professor for design history and design theory at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and is a curator for design at the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt am Main . Director Institute for Design Exchange (IDEe).

Life

Klemp studied design and visual communication in Dortmund and Münster as well as art history and history at the Philipps University of Marburg. In 1991 he received his doctorate with a thesis on industrial construction in the early modern period. The Frankfurt head of the cultural department, Hilmar Hoffmann , brought him to the Office for Science and Art in 1988 as an art consultant, where he headed the cultural department from 1989 to 2006. From 1988 to 1996 he was also head of the municipal gallery in the Carmelite monastery and from 1988 to 2006 of the municipal gallery in the canvas house . 1995 to 2005 member of the Presidium of the German Design Council . 2006 to 2012 exhibition director and from 2012 to 2014 deputy director at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main . After teaching positions in Nuremberg, Wiesbaden and Würzburg, since 2008 honorary professor in the Department of Computer Science and Media Design at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and since 2014 professor in the Department of Product Design at the HfG Offenbach . In 2009 Klemp was appointed to the board of the Dieter and Ingeborg Rams Foundation . Since 2018 Chairman of the Ernst May Society in Frankfurt am Main.

Research and activity areas

Since the 1980s, Klemp has primarily been involved in architecture, communication and product design. In the 1980s and 1990s, he mainly presented new computer-oriented positions in communication design in exhibitions and publications ( Neville Brody , Hard Werken , Studio Dumbar ). In addition, the field of art in public space and public design is a theoretical and practical field of activity. He has supervised numerous competitions on art in public space in Frankfurt (including the Neuer Börneplatz Memorial , 1995 - Adorno Memorial , 2003 - Frankfurter Märchenbrunnen , 2006). In recent times, Klemp has primarily been concerned with a function- oriented design (exhibition Less and More. The Design Ethos by Dieter Rams ) with design in the Rhine-Main area since the 1920s and with the paradigms of design processes.
