Small cultural history of money

The almost 190-page book is a three-part essay that combines a (literary) history of money with an interpretation of modern banking and sovereign debt crises. Schnaas interprets these crises as crises of belief in money ( Latin credo - I believe). They are not an expression of market failure, not a result of greed and not an argument against stock market speculation, but the result of a politically induced system failure. The dip in growth in the industrialized nations and the abandonment of the gold standard at the beginning of the 1970s would have favored the emergence of a "financially liberal (social) state capitalism", the better or worse of which was based on the infinite production of debt . The gradual "realization of the credit illusions" on which we have built our future brings us a little closer to the real purchasing power of the present. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praises the "brilliant analyzes of literary works" and states that Schnaas writes "gripping, with impressive erudition, linguistic power and intellectual joy in combining". The Neue Zürcher Zeitung finds it "impressive how Schnaas likes to combine his considerable literacy in the canon of European cultural history with profound knowledge on economic (contemporary) issues". The Süddeutsche Zeitung thinks that Schnaas' book was written "very carefully, with many sources and concise quotations". However, she criticizes the fact that research into the causes of the financial crisis is neglected. Deutschlandradio Kultur criticizes the style of "baroque abundance", "metaphor-indulgence" and the "overly complex scholarly jargon".
