Dietrich Braess

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich Braess (born June 16, 1938 in Hamburg ) is a German mathematician who deals with numerical mathematics .

Dietrich Braess, Oberwolfach 2005

Braess received his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics under Gustav Kramer at the University of Hamburg in 1964 ( influence of the interaction in the final state on the electro-splitting of the deuteron near the threshold ). He then switched to mathematics and completed his habilitation in 1968 at the University of Münster , where he was then a professor. From the late 1970s until 2003 he was a professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

He dealt with approximation theory , multigrid methods and finite elements , CG methods . He is known for the publication of the Braess paradox , which u. a. occurs in traffic planning.

Dietrich Braess has been retired since summer 2003.
