Dietrich II. (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich II. († March 23, 1221 or 1224 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1213 to 1221 or 1224 .

Münsterschwarzach before Dietrich

Dietrich II was the twenty-second abbot of the Münsterschwarzach monastery. The abbey had established itself as the monastery of the Würzburg bishops since the beginning of the 11th century . As the first abbot they installed the abbot Alapold, who was to take care of the consolidation of monastic life. Some prelates followed, whose appointments were related to the so-called Gorzer reforms . The most famous of these abbots was Egbert von Münsterschwarzach .

When the reform efforts slowly subsided in the 12th century because other monasteries took up the renewals, the bishops had Abbot Dietrich I brought from the Black Forest monastery Hirsau to the Main. His successors also continued the Hirsau reforms. However, the efforts were not very successful. The monastery buildings were partially renewed under Dietrich II's immediate predecessors. Abbot Gottfried even assisted in the canonization of Otto von Bamberg.

Life

Nothing is known about the abbot's origins and family. He was probably part of a noble family that had its ancestral seat in the diocese of Würzburg . After the abbot's predecessors discussed the abolition of the principle of nobility, it was decided to continue the provisions. The monks were still all noble. After the death of Abbot Gottfried in December 1213, Dietrich II became the new head of the monastery.

Dietrich first documented his abbot on June 3, 1220 on a diploma from Bishop Otto I. von Würzburg . Before that, Dietrich had concluded a prayer fraternity with the Ottobeuren monastery in Central Swabia in 1217 , which was now supposed to pray for the salvation of the Münsterschwarzach confreres. The Schwarzach abbots were now also recorded in the Ottobeuren Nekrolog . Dietrich II was the first to receive this honor: he died on March 23, 1221 or 1224.
