First he taught as a private lecturer in Münster, from 1951 as an associate professor and from 1954 as a full professor at the Free University of Berlin. 1957/58 he worked there as dean of the law faculty. Oehler turned down a call to the University of Marburg , but switched to the University of Cologne in 1961. As director of the Criminal Science Institute, he built up the Department for Foreign and International Criminal Law, which he headed for a quarter of a century. In Cologne, too, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Law (1966–1968). In 1967 Oehler founded the Institute for Broadcasting Law at the University of Cologne together with Heinz Hübner , Klaus Stern and Hans Brack and took over the management of the institute's criminal law department. In 1984 he retired.
