Dietz Bering

Dietz Bering (born September 3, 1935 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a German historian and linguist who became known in Germany primarily for his books on the conceptual history of the intellectual and Der Name als Stigma about anti-Semitism and naming. Until his retirement he taught Older Language and Literature as an adjunct professor at the University of Cologne .

Life

Bering studied in Münster and Berlin , first law and then completed the state examination for teaching in German and history. He then worked as an assessor at a high school. He received his doctorate in 1977 from the Free University of Berlin and completed his habilitation in 1986 at the University of Cologne. In the academic year 1981/82 he was a founding fellow at the Berlin Wissenschaftskolleg and later a visiting professor at the Sorbonne Nouvelle . He has been retired since 2000. Bering was friends with Benno Ohnesorg and his wife in Berlin and reported on the events that led to Ohnesorg's death.

Awards

  • 1989: Annual prize from the Henning Kaufmann Foundation to promote German name research on the basis of linguistic history
  • 1997: Cologne Prize from the University of Cologne and the City of Cologne
  • 2012: "Humanities International - Prize for the Promotion of the Translation of Humanities Works" by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels , the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the Foreign Office (translation of The Epoch of the Intellectual into Russian)
