The Diga Rhythm Band was an Indian- influenced world music band consisting of eleven percussionists that emerged from the Tal Vadya Rhythm Band . It was founded at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael (California) by tabla master Zakir Hussain , the son of Alla Rakha .

Band history

In 1975 the band was officially renamed the Diga Rhythm Band when the Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart joined them. Besides Hart and Hussain, all other musicians were international students of the Ali Akbar College of Music .

They went on tour together in 1975 and 1976. Some American guest musicians were invited, the best-known Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia .

Mickey Hart also produced the band's only album " Diga ", which was released in 1976 under the Grateful Dead Records label. The album was re-released several times, including on Rykodisc (a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group ) and Video Arts . The album itself was produced in Hart's own studio in Novato , California .

After Grateful Dead ended their break in 1976, Hart returned and left the " Diga Rhythm Band ", but kept in touch with Hussain and later played with him again, including at Planet Drum . The Diga Rhythm Band broke up.
