Digicult

Digicult (also "digiCULT" and "DigiCult-Verbund") is a network of museums for the digital recording and publication of museum holdings. Partners are the museums of the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg ( museums north ), Saarland , Thuringia and the Rhineland Regional Association . This opens up new possibilities for documenting, presenting and promoting the cultural landscapes of the participating countries.

history

In cooperation with over 200 museums and collections, including university collections from Greifswald, Hamburg, Jena and Kiel, structures are being developed and tested with the help of which the cultural treasures of the museums involved are digitized, documented and presented to a broad group of users from science, on the basis of new technologies, Education and the public are made available. The digitized collection objects are presented in the portal of the Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg museums ( museums north ), in the digiCULT portal Saarland ( museums in Saar ) and in the museum portal in Thuringia ( museums in Thuringia ). In addition, the object data recorded is integrated into national (e.g. German digital library , BAM portal ) and international (e.g. Europeana ) cultural databases.

In order to achieve the goals of an improved networking of cultural institutions, tools and vocabularies for knowledge management and data exchange are being further developed. To this end, the association actively participates in projects and work of specialist organizations such as the documentation specialist group of the German Museum Association and is a member of the "Competence Network DDB" for the development of the German Digital Library .

digiCULT Museen SH started in June 2003 as a three-year project financed by funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the digital recording and publication of selected museum holdings in the state. From November 1, 2007 to October 31, 2010, another Funding phase financed by state funds from the Schleswig-Holstein future program. The official sponsor was the research and development center of FH Kiel GmbH. After the original headquarters on Museumsberg in Flensburg, the project was located on the campus of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel until 2010 and was supported by it. After the establishment of a registered cooperative in July 2010, digiCULT-Verbund eG started business operations as a legally secure and self-sufficient organization.

technology

The software offered by digiCULT was developed from open source components and has four main modules that are networked with each other through web services. The data is entered via a relational, network-compatible database that is installed on site or via a web-based online version.
