Dimitrios Partsalidis

Dimitrios "Mitsos" Partsalidis ( Greek Δημήτρης Παρτσαλίδης , * 1905 in Trabzon ; † 1980 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and during the Greek Civil War in 1949 briefly head of a communist counter-government.

Partsalidis was elected Member of the National Assembly (Voulí ton Ellínon) , in which he represented the interests of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) (Κομμουνιστικό Κόμμα Ελλάδας).

He was imprisoned from 1936 to 1941 during the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas . After the occupation of Greece by the German Wehrmacht , he belonged to the resistance movement and was secretary of the National Liberation Front (EAM) (Εθνικό Απελευθερωτικό Μέτωπο). However, he was captured again and sent to a concentration camp . Later he was on February 12, 1945 in his function as secretary of the EAM co-signer of the Varkiza Agreement , which initially led to the armistice between the regular government and the EAM.

Greek civil war and head of an opposing government

During the Greek Civil War from June 1946 to October 9, 1949 (Ελληνικός εμφύλιος πόλεμος) he was from April 3, 1949 to October 1950 as the successor of Nikolaos Zachariadis head of the provisional democratic government and thus "Prime Minister" of a government against the regular governments of Themistoklis Sofoulis , Alexandros Diomidis , Ioannis Theotokis , Sophoklis Venizelos and Nikolaos Plastiras . After the defeat of the communists, however, he went into exile in the Soviet Union on August 28, 1949 . In 1953 he was expelled from the KKE.

Period of military dictatorship

Partsalidis did not return to Greece until 1969 and subsequently fought against the Greek military dictatorship of Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos . In 1971, however, he was arrested as an opponent of the regime and only released from custody two years later after the fall of the military dictatorship as part of an amnesty .
