Dipendra was born as the son of the Crown Prince and later King Birendra and the Crown Princess and later Queen Aishwarya . In 1972, after the death of his grandfather Mahendra and the accession of his father Birendra to the throne, Prince Dipendra was named Crown Prince. On June 1, 2001, Crown Prince Dipendra killed almost the entire Nepalese royal family in an organized mass murder by gunfire. However, there are doubts among the population as to whether the act took place as described in the official investigation report.

Dipendra died three days after the mass murder as a result of a shot in the head that he inflicted on himself immediately after the murder. Until then he was in a coma, but was considered the official head of state during this time.
