education

Economics is mainly studied at universities . It is also possible to study ( applied ) economics at some universities of applied sciences.

Since the beginning of the Bologna Process in 1999, the course has consisted of an undergraduate bachelor's degree (degree B.A. or B. Sc.) With a standard period of six semesters , which can be followed by a four-semester master’s degree (M.A., M. Sc.). The bachelor's program mainly covers basic subjects such as micro- and macro-economics , business mathematics , business law and econometrics . In the master’s program, subjects such as economic policy , economic theory and finance as well as elective subjects (such as economic history or business informatics ) are added, which enable a focus to be set. If the prerequisites of the respective doctoral degree regulations are met (e.g. good master’s degree), a doctorate can be sought at universities and equivalent colleges afterwards with an economics dissertation .

Before the Bologna Process, studies in German-speaking countries usually consisted of a continuous course. Upon completion of this degree, a diploma was usually obtained in Germany ( with the addition “(FH)” at universities of applied sciences ), a Magister in Austria and a licentiate in Switzerland .

The study of economic sciences gained greater popularity around 1850. “Economics” was initially incorporated into existing courses such as the national economy course . In 1923, the program was political economy adapted and in the degree program Economics including the academic degree level graduate economist converted. This should meet the needs of the economy more. Based on the graduate economist, the academic degree Diplom-Kaufmann was introduced in 1924 (see also the article Historical Development of the Diplom-Kaufmann ).
